Halloween Word Search
This halloween word search printable pack has six free puzzles, two each for ages 5 to 7, 7 to 9 and 9 and up, plus an answer key at the back. Print the whole PDF or just the level you need. Each puzzle has a word list with tick boxes, and two of the six have no scary words at all. The easy sheets keep every word across or down, so a young reader can finish alone. Use them for a class party, quiet time or the wait before trick or treating.

Pick the right Halloween word search printable
If you searched for halloween free printable word searches, this pack gives you three levels in one download. The puzzles are sorted by level, and each level changes the grid, the word count and the directions the words can run. On the easy sheets the words run across and down and nowhere else. The medium sheets add diagonals that slope forward. The hard sheets use all eight directions, including backwards.

| Puzzle | Level | Grid and words | Directions | Some of the words |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Halloween Night | Easy, ages 5 to 7 | 10 x 10, 8 words | Across and down | Ghost, bat, moon, witch |
| Trick or Treat | Easy, ages 5 to 7 | 10 x 10, 8 words | Across and down | Candy, taffy, apple, cider |
| Haunted House | Medium, ages 7 to 9 | 12 x 12, 12 words | Across, down, diagonal forward | Haunted, creaky, cauldron, skeleton |
| Costume Party | Medium, ages 7 to 9 | 12 x 12, 12 words | Across, down, diagonal forward | Wizard, pirate, robot, scarecrow |
| Spooky Creatures | Hard, ages 9 and up | 15 x 15, 18 words | Any direction | Werewolf, zombie, phantom, gargoyle |
| Pumpkin Patch | Hard, ages 9 and up | 15 x 15, 18 words | Any direction | Pumpkin, scarecrow, hayride, cornfield |
The age bands are my judgment, so move a child up or down if a sheet feels wrong. PuzzlePages uses 4 to 6, 7 to 9 and 10 and up for its three Halloween levels, and Safe Kid Games runs from a 7 x 7 grid with 9 words up to a 22 x 22 grid with 15 words. A reader comment on one free pack I read says some words on the list were missing from the grid. I checked each puzzle here with a script, so every listed word appears in the grid exactly once.
How to solve a Halloween word search
The usual way is to read the grid line by line and hope. Some habits beat that. Mommy Made That suggests reading the word list first and crossing off each word as you find it, and the hard puzzles here reward that.
- Start with the longest words. Scarecrow, werewolf and cornfield have few places to hide.
- Hunt for the rare letters. A Z in the grid is probably zombie, and a W can start witch, wizard or werewolf.
- Find a first letter, then check the eight squares around it for the second letter.
- Circle each word and cross it off the list, so the list shrinks as you go.
- On the hard sheets, read the rows backwards and the columns upwards too.
A strip of paper laid under a row keeps a young finger on the right line. Slide it down one row at a time.
Halloween word searches for kids who do not like scary things
Not every child enjoys ghosts and skeletons, and not every family does Halloween. If you want a word search halloween sheet with nothing scary, two of the six puzzles keep the spooky words out. Trick or Treat is all food, with candy, taffy, apple and cider. Pumpkin Patch is a fall harvest puzzle with hayride, cornfield and acorn. Both work for a class party where some families skip the holiday.
For ages 5 to 7, read the word list out loud first and let your child point at the first letter of each word. Then they hunt for that letter in the grid. Keep the first sheet to about 10 minutes and stop when the fun does. PuzzlePages notes that siblings of different ages can play the same theme side by side, so a younger child can take an easy sheet while an older one takes a hard one.
Halloween word search hard: ideas for older kids and parties
The two hard puzzles are a real test. They have 15 x 15 grids, 18 words each and words that run backwards. Set a timer for 20 minutes and see who finishes first. Mommy Made That lists classroom centers, early finisher work, homeschool practice and Halloween parties as uses for its pack, and the same ideas fit here.
- Timed race: Hand each player one puzzle and a pencil. Whoever finds every word first wins.
- Costume party: Hand out Costume Party while guests wait for pizza.
- Team puzzle: Tape one hard sheet to a wall and let teams take turns circling words.
- Quiet hour: Put a puzzle and a pencil out after trick or treating, once the candy is sorted.
- Classroom: Print the easy and medium sheets and let children choose.

How to print the Halloween word search printable
The pages are US Letter size, 8.5 by 11 inches. In your printer settings, choose actual size or 100 percent, not fit to page, so the grid keeps its shape. Regular paper and black ink work fine, and the cover page has the rules.
Free download: Get all 6 Halloween word search puzzles and the answer key as one PDF
Pages 2 to 7 hold the puzzles, so print those first. Pages 8 to 10 are the answer key with every word colored in, so keep them for the grown up or the teacher. Slide a puzzle into a clear sleeve and use a dry erase marker, and you can use it again next October.
Frequently asked questions about Halloween word searches
Are these free printable Halloween word search puzzles?
Yes. The pack is a free PDF, made for homes and classrooms. Do not sell it, and do not repost the file elsewhere.

Yes. The last three pages of the PDF show every word colored in on its grid.
What age is a Halloween word search for?
Ages 5 to 7 suit the easy puzzles, ages 7 to 9 the medium ones and ages 9 and up the hard ones. Treat these as starting points and adjust for your child.
What is the hardest Halloween word search here?
Spooky Creatures and Pumpkin Patch. Each has a 15 x 15 grid with 18 words that can run in any direction, including backwards.
Are there Halloween word searches without scary words?
Yes. Trick or Treat has only food words, and Pumpkin Patch has fall harvest words such as hayride, cornfield and acorn.
Is every word on the list in the puzzle?
Yes. I checked each puzzle with a script, and every listed word appears in the grid exactly once.
Can I use these Halloween word searches for a party or classroom?
Yes. Print one per child for a class party, or tape a hard sheet to a wall for teams. The host keeps the answer key pages.
If I were choosing for a family table, I would print one easy sheet and one hard sheet and let the age gap sort itself out. I can see how much a seven year old would enjoy beating a parent on Trick or Treat. Print the pack, find a pencil and start hunting.
